Doing What I Want for a Long Time, AND nothing better to do
|
Like I said, here we go again......... Pete...who gives a crap about torque and horsepower at low rpm's? Maybe not you. It's about drive ability, Jon, not whether or not you can spank a 'stang'. Power is only important under the curve, and that is a combination of torque and horsepower, regardless of rpm. When the power comes on early, like in the day of American muscle V8's, it was all made at low rpm's with torque. The beauty of the later B230 Volvo IL4 is that by comparison it put's out a lot more torque/ CC at low rpm's than most of old Detroit big block's. I think the key to making power from these engines is making low rpm torque whether it's an n/a or turbo. And, to characterize all 7's and 9's handling prowess as "feeling like a pig" is painting with a rather broad brush, don't you agree? The power to weight ratio of a 700/900 with 10 added hp vs giving a 240 10 added hp is like night & day. It's simple physics, the weight and HP gains cancel. I wasn't commenting about handling, but since you mention it, a bigger car like the 700/900 w/ such a front heavy nose have substantially more dive into corners than a 240, and it takes a lot more sways to keep them on track because of that. IMHO, they are pigs in that dept Hey, I love 245's too but just how well can a stock 240 handle when the rear track is 2-3 inches narrower than the front? Pretty well if you stiffen up the suspension and keep the rear from walking. In my experience lowering a 240 does very little to improve the handling. The front/rear track differences are to compensate for understeer w/ the McPherson, so it behaves evenly front to back. I prefer a 140 if you really want my opinion. Still better than a 700/900. Pete. It's time you spilled the beans; expiring minds want to know! What secrets are you hiding under that hood? I'm thinking you had a VX cam but said you pulled it? School me...school us...pass on some of the tricks of the trade that you've used with your 245. Jon, Still have the VX cam advanced 5 deg. If you spend 6 hrs doing a 'zero tolerance' valve adjust, you may find the high comp n/a sweet and lots more low end. A well tuned exhaust can help, too. I can't stress the importance of a good stage 1 and ignition, ignition, ignition. Yes I messed with the ign. Plus the fuel pressure and injectors. Plus intake improvements If you don't add enough fuel and ignition, make the engine breathe better to make the burn complete AND consistent, smooth to red line, your wasting your time with other mods, and that includes adding a turbo. What a lot of rwd brickers don't (or are otherwise coerced and dissuaded from, because everybody says TURBO that thang!!!) is taking a B21/23/230F and modding it to find out that with a little effort it behaves as well as or better than a stock 200/700/900 brick, especially in the handling department. If everybody took their n/a 240 and put a stock 200/700/900 turbo engine into it, they would all be very disappointed. Without some gains by improving the +T, it is a waste of time. And that's not the point. I don't drive the 245 like it's a race car, that's not what it's all about (for me). it's about finding the peddle with 1/8 inch of travel, doing 80 mph and getting 30 mpg, and having enough throttle to pass WITHOUT having to kick in a turbo or downshift, which is where I've got this car refined to. that's OK Jon, I'm good with your feedback and comments. It's that +T mentality I object to, and you're not the first to suggest it. While we're at it why don't we all just buy early Buick Riveria's and +T the 455 Wildcat? See my point? It doesn't make sense. I actually know someone who did that, and slapped the 600 hp +T wildcat w/ Olds Toranado drive train into their motor home. I think that makes sense. If you really want my idea of a fine rwd Volvo with potential to make a run of it, I would opt to have a 140/B20 w/ carbs, super high compression, maxed out in every way. I've already had that car a few times, and IMHO the potential is far better than +T'ing a B21/23/230 n/a. That's why I won't do it. Now that you've got the Gecko (my) car, let's see it go! I want to see 13's 1/4 times! You'll be there a lot quicker than doing anything to a 200/700/900 Edited by vvpete, Sep 3 2009, 10:18 PM.

Doing What I Want for a Long Time, AND nothing better to do

On the Road Again! Ah Just Can't Wait to Get on the Road Again! A little Willie for ya. Finished up last Wednesday. I used the old fender for now, a little body hammering, and it's nearly acceptable as the dd and dog mobile, it's running again, and everything works! Ozzie's happy. No E-Codes, but the entire repair cost me $72, incl the front clip in the same paint code, grill, trim pieces, Bondo, paint, and primer which I haven't done yet on the fender, but did the inner fender and area below the battery tray. I was able to use the old bumper & mounts, but had to drill through the frame to put a new a bolt for it. I found a new/old stock fender for $150, which I'll get when cash for it is available. This was a poor mans repair. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I still need the trim piece for the parking light, otherwise it's staying like this for a while. |

Don't know about Chris, but Dinkel's didn't play a part in my mis-hap. Just a bad driver in front of me. I just found out yesterday that the kid claimed bodily injury, but only $1100 for damage to the car, mostly paint. What a shister, sounds like he took my ins co for whatever he could get. I'll have to go looking for the right side parking light assy at the P&P this weekend, as the lens on this one has a chip as well as a missing brow. |

Some new sound in the old brick. Due to an unfortunate oil spill in the cargo area last weekend, where I was going to the recycling center with about 12 gallons of old motor oil collected in my garage over the years, I had to make good on a Infinity that challenged the worthiness of the 245 and took a corner too fast while passing said ricer, and dumped a gallon of the black stuff all over the Alpine R 6 x9's in the fabric covered boxes. Thanks to the cargo liner for containing the mess, and the speakers are OK, but I won't use the boxes anymore. I know, what an idiot. Anyway, I was going through some boxes in the garage and forgot about these Ohmage all-weather speakers I have, which I bought 2 sets some years ago for the patio at the old house and never used since I moved in here. I hooked them up and they sound great! I put a set in the garage, too. They were rated as the best high-end outdoor speakers on the market at the time, 6 1/2" poly woofers and 1 1/2" dome tweeters, solid 'Granite' housings, should hold up well to Ozzie's slime. They are much better sound than the Alpine 6 x 9's, better bass, and clean crisp high's, and handle more power from the Phoenix Gold amp driving them: ![]() ![]() ![]() I put some button head screws in the side panels and they clip on easily and can be taken out for some good sound at the lake or our next meet. Diggin' the new sounds! |

Yeah, safe from dog slime too. Sealed plastic boxes. And even better, some things that are important; they don't slide around like the old boxes, which goes under the category of Driveability, and they can be taken out for extra curricular activities, something the Swedes call Versatility, i.e. what the wagon is all about. I guess I just don't place much importance on 'seksy' or image consciousness, do I? Just recall how many times I showed up at the meets with all the dog hair & slime covering the interior. I could see the judges make faces at me & the car; shudder
