Opinions on shocks for 945 trip-mobile

Well at some point last year I bought 4 new Bilstein TC shocks. I installed new springs and the TCs only in the rear; and the front ones are still fairly worn out--at least I guess they are, I don't even know if they are stock, etc..

I have HDs @ all 4 points on my 744 and it rides harder than my STi.. Yet the TCs in my 945 feel pretty loose, *almost* worse than what I'd consider stock, although still better than the ones I removed (remember, only on the rear at this point.)

So my question is--should I go ahead and put in the brand-new TCs on the front and see how I like it? Or will I be completely disappointed? As it is I get a lot of front-to-rear rocking which I totally don't like, but perhaps that's just normal for a wagon?? Or, since this thing weighs a bit more than a sedan, maybe the ride would be acceptible if I went ahead and got 4 HDs for it?

My sister has a 4Runner w/ HDs in the back and KYB Gasadjusts in the front, and it actually seems to ride pretty well.. So perhaps I should get HDs for the back of my 945 and maybe the TCs in the front? Or do I have that backwards?

Comments?

Doing What I Want for a Long Time, AND nothing better to do
Put the stiffer gas shocks in the back if you want. It'll keep the back from pitching in corners and level.

Or just use what you have. a new set on one end will act like a worn set when the opposite end is worn.
the new one's push up against the worn ones, and will still bounce, sometimes even more if the rear's are worn and new one's on the front.

So wagons are probably best with stiffer in the rear and softer (but new) in the front? If that's the case then I'll go that direction..

Yes a set of gas shocks in back & hydraulics in front will improve the back end dive through corners without sacrificing ride quality. Not just wagons, either.
But honestly, if you already have front Bil TC's just put them on. It will be a huge improvement over worn stock front hydraulic struts.

FYI, the 960 uses high pressure gas shocks in the rear and a gas/hydraulic front strut, and the 945 is essentially the same car except for the multi-link rear suspension, and the ride + handling is mo-better with gas shocks in the rear. I had a '94 965, which is the same rwd solid rear axle as your 945 and put Bil HD on all four corners, IPD lowering kit, and the ride went to crap and but the handling was improved, somewhat. I thought the rear Nivomat's in good condition was better to keep the back end planted through corners.

Sounds good, Pete. I think I'll schedule a time to put in those TCs on the front and see how it goes. Thanks for the info.
